Graduate Assistant Application

General Description: Develop, coordinate and deliver health education presentations to Texas State students. Plan and implement campus health and wellness outreach events. Train and advise peer health educators in Men Against Violence and Healthy Cats. Manage presentation request system.

Job Duties:

  • Present health and wellness programs for classes, residence halls, athletes, student organizations and community organizations (public schools, youth programs). 20%
  • Develop, revise and update health education presentations. 15%
  • Plan and implement health & wellness outreach events for the Texas State campus and community organizations. 10%
  • Train and advise peer health educators. 20%
  • Manage presentations requested by faculty, staff and community organizations through email/phone correspondence, outlook calendars and Microsoft Excel. 30%
  • Attend HPS and Student Health Center staff meetings and function as a paraprofessional staff member. 5%

Terms of Employment:

  • Average of 20 hours worked per week (unless otherwise approved by department director)
  • Start date: October 1, 2019 (negotiable)
  • 9 or 12 month appointment with opportunity to renew for second year. Appointment ending in May of second year (unless discussed with supervisor)
  • Available to work evenings and weekends
  • No paid vacation, sick leave, or university observed holidays.
  • Programs may reqire travel to Texas State University Round Rock campus


  • Monthly Stipend received at the beginning of each month.
  • Average of $1317/month (first year of employment)
  • Average of $1377/month (second year of employment)

Required Qualifications:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education before start date.
  • Enrollment in a graduate degree program at Texas State University.
  • Candidate must be enrolled in nine hours in an eligible Texas State graduate program each long semester and maintain a 3.0 GPA. 
  • Willingness to work with diverse populations, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate degree of confidentiality.
  • Computer skills and experience with PC program (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Applicants majoring in Health Education, Health Psychology, Health Professions, Psychology, Student Affairs in Higher Education, or Sociology.
  • Experience delivering presentations and/or public speaking.
