  • Information about the Student Health Center
    • The Texas State Student Health Center is a nationally accredited, convenient and affordable option for college students who require medical care. We believe that good physical and mental health are important and contribute to the overall success of college students.
    • There is no cost for registered students to see a medical provider (physician or nurse practitioner) at the Student Health Center. Lab work, X-rays and prescriptions are available at reasonable prices.
    • Students do not need insurance to use the Student Health Center; in fact, since we offer quality medical care at reasonable prices and do not charge a co-pay to see a physician or a nurse, we do not accept private insurance. You can submit a claim for reimbursement with your insurance company after your student's visit. We offer comprehensive medical care with pharmacy, lab, and digital x-ray services on site. The combination of the convenience and the extremely reasonable prices make the Student Health Center an excellent choice for your student's health care needs.
    • The Student Health Center does recommend that all students have health insurance in case they need to be referred to a specialist or must be hospitalized. We do offer an optional Student Insurance Plan that covers Sickness and Injury. This plan supplements the services offered by the Student Health Center. If for any reason your student becomes uninsured, you may want to consider the optional Student Insurance Plan when evaluating insurance options for your student. Please click here if you would like information about the optional Student Insurance Plan.
    • Meet our medical providers.
    • Read more about our accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.
  • Information for new students
    • Texas State does NOT require immunization records or physical examinations for new students.
    • If your student has any special medical conditions or situations, please call us at (512) 245-2167 to talk to a nurse about any additional requirements they may need to fulfill before scheduling an appointment with us.
  • Confidentiality information
    • While we understand your desire to know about the well-being of your student, state and federal law does not permit the Student Health Center to release medical information to parents without the written consent of the patient if the patient is over the age of 18. We can discuss your student's health care if they have completed the Authorization to Release Medical Information form.
    • In case of emergency situations, the patient's parents will be notified as soon as possible if they are listed as the patient's Emergency Contact.
  • What should I do if my student is sick or injured?
    • Tell your student to check their temperature, if needed.
    • Have them call the Student Health Center at (512) 245-2167 to make an appointment. Please do not call for them because the appointment nurse will need to know their specific symptoms in order to allow an appropriate amount of time for the appointment. We will give your student an appointment as soon as possible.
    • If this is your student's first visit here, tell them to fill out a Report of Medical History form.
    • Tell them to be at the Student Health Center at least 10 minutes before their appointment.
    • If your student is in need of medical attention outside our normal hours of operation, there are several alternatives. Please click to read about our After-Hours Options. These include:
      • Ask-A-Nurse Advice line
      • Central Texas Medical Center
      • Corridor Clinic
      • Central Texas Clinic
      • Rediclinic
  • What needs to be done if my student is under the age of 18?
    • By State law, the Student Health Center cannot treat your student if they are under the age of 18 without parental consent.
    • If your student is under the age of 18, you must fill out a Parental Consent to Treatment for a Minor form.
    • It is not necessary that you accompany them to their appointment as long as the Parental Consent to Treatment for a Minor form has been filled out.
    • The consent form can also be faxed to the Student Health Center at (512) 245-9288.
    • If you have questions about parental consent, contact the Student Health Center's Health Information Management Office at (512) 245-2161.
  • Recommended immunizations
    • Texas State does NOT require a physical exam, immunizations, or a record of immunizations for incoming students. If your student has not yet been immunized for Hepatitis B, or if they need a diphtheria and tetanus toxiod booster, they can receive them at the Student Health Center. In addition, flu shots will be available for students in the fall. The Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine is also recommended for incoming students; however, the Student Health Center does not offer this particular immunization.
    • The Student Health Center, the American College Health Association (ACHA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) strongly recommend that all first-year students living in residence halls receive immunization against meningococcal disease. The Student Health Center recommends the vaccine for all first year students, regardless of where they live, and to all other college students under the age of 25 years who wish to reduce their risk for the disease. This vaccine is available at the Student Health Center.
  • Things to expect during the freshman year
    • The Texas State University Counseling Center has developed a calendar for parents of incoming freshmen to help them understand what their children will be going through and what to expect at certain points throughout the year. Read about some of the highlights.
    • To request a copy of the calendar, please call the Counseling Center at (512) 245-2208.
